"Casitas in shades of mango, banana and blueberry offset by brilliant white sand give this resort a Gauguin-like quality… For extra space, choose a two-bedroom villa or the 5,000-square-foot "Beach Mansion." Delectable though pricey seafood is served at Mambo."

"Laid-back Ambergris Caye is just a 20-minute flight from gritty Belize City, but a world apart. The beaches are powdery white, shopping barefoot is encouraged, and the pace is languorous, thanks to the island's sandy, car-free roads (locals get around by golf cart, fat-tired bicycle, or a leisurely saunter). The newly renovated Matachica Beach Resort on the private northern side of the island, makes an ideal base: it's sufficiently off the beaten track to feel secluded, though only a short water-taxi ride from the lively restaurants and shops of downtown San Pedro. Not that you'll feel compelled to leave the resort, which offers stellar seafood dishes at its restaurant Mambo, film screenings in the new martini lounge, and banana-and-brown sugar facials at the spa. The 14 bungalows are painted in bright, Gauguin hues such as mango and watermelon pink. All have sea views, air-conditioning, thatched roofs, vibrant murals by Lionel Dumas and glass-walled showers surrounded by bamboo and Mexican tiles."

"Matachica [is a] a 14-villa resort with an excellent restaurant, Mambo; a full-service spa, Jade; and a pool and beach-front Jacuzzi. The resort and its villas are colorfully decorated with items from Morocco to Mexico, which the owners, picked up along their travels.
The day was all about relaxing, so I opted for a sea salt and sea clay body mask massage, which, I discovered, required that I be completely naked, with nothing but a tea towel preserving my modesty. Mary Louisa, my therapist, assured me that the treatment was comparable to a mini facelift, and that I would leave with skin as smooth as a baby's. She was right. The sea salt scrub exfoliated, while the mud, from the depths of Mexico, felt cool against my skin. I was then wrapped, like a tortilla, and left to "bake" for about 20 minutes. After showering, I touched my face, which was definitely soft, and headed back to the sun relaxed, glowing and, I'm pretty sure, toxin-less."

"Luxury means not just a beautiful beach but discreet service, excellent food, a fabulous spa and, of course, special accommodation. Matachica Beach Resort fits the bill perfectly. It's within a mile of a spectacular barrier reef and has just 14 thatch-roofed guest villas, so even when the resort is full, the beach remains blissfully empty."
